Object Gallery Exhibition: State.Respond.
Feb 2010
Schamburg + Alvisse are privileged to be part of State. Respond., a new exhibition at Object Gallery, Surry Hills (Feb 06 - Mar 28, 2010).
Object’s Associate Director Brian Parkes, curated an exhibition to feature five exhibitors with a significant track record in engaging with the ideas and principles of ethical and sustainable design. Evocative, provocative statements, images and examples are displayed forming each designer’s response to the Object Statement....
“Recent debate within the design community would suggest that sustainability is, or should now be, a fundamental consideration for all designers......This is both a confronting and exciting time for designers... about the work they do, the way the do it and the impact it has on... our planet.”
S+A installed five O-50s surrounding a 3metre pile of plastic waste, the material they are formed from. Each chair has been upholstered in post-production fabric offcuts and embroidered in responses to the Statement. Schamburg + Alvisse has upcycled over 65 tonnes of raw e-waste material through producing O-50 chairs. The largest single order to date of 1200 chairs for Westpac Bank contributed to the buildings green star rating.
